A Whisper of Desire (The Disgraced Lords #4)
Author: Bronwen Evans
Publisher: Loveswept
Release Date: 1 December 2015
Sensual heat melts the ice in the new Disgraced Lords novel from USA Today bestselling author Bronwen Evans, as a marriage of convenience leads to delightful pleasure—and mortal danger.
Lady Marisa Hawkestone’s nightmare is just beginning when she wakes up naked, with no memory of the night before, lying next to Maitland Spencer, the Duke of Lyttleton—a man so aloof and rational he’s nicknamed “the Cold Duke.” A scandal ensues, in which Marisa’s beloved beau deserts her. As a compromised woman, Marisa agrees to marry Maitland. But on her wedding night, Marisa discovers the one place the duke shows emotion: in the bedroom, where the man positively scorches the sheets.
Taught from a young age to take duty seriously, Maitland cannot understand his new wife’s demands on his love and affection. Marisa’s hot-blooded spirit, however, does have its attractions—especially at night. In retrospect, it seems quite silly that he didn’t marry sooner. But being one of the Libertine Scholars requires constant vigilance, even more so when the enemy with a grudge against his closest friends targets Marisa. Now Maitland must save the woman who sets his heart aflame—or die trying.

Review
Maitland and Marisa's story certainly gets off to an unusual start when they wake up one morning, naked together in bed with no memory of how they got there. Completely compromised, Maitland offers marriage to Marisa which she pragmatically accepts. She had been in love with another man but she understands that this is now her only real option. But marriage to Maitland comes with consequences. He, and his fellow Libertine Scholars, are being targeted by a malicious villainess determined to seek revenge for their fathers' wrongdoings.
Marisa is a really feisty and bold heroine, who isn't afraid to go after what she wants. I loved that she was determined to make the best of her marriage to Maitland even though it wasn't what she had wanted. She also tries to communicate with Maitland and is very forthright. I thought she was a wonderful character. She doesn't bemoan her situation and holds her head high amongst the ton. She's very compassionate and wants to help orphans after witnessing firsthand the horrors that some young orphans are forced into.
Maitland was also a brilliant hero. He's complicated and his past has left him with emotional scars. Maitland is known as the 'Cold Duke' and has erected an almost impenetrable wall around his emotions to defend himself and protect others from himself (in his opinion). My heart broke for Maitland many times over. He holds a rigid control over himself to stop himself becoming like his father, and it's through Marisa that he can finally come to terms with his past.
I love this series and I loved this book as well. It's intense and incredibly passionate. The characters both develop throughout the story and I loved seeing their sizzling interactions. We inch slightly further forward in the mystery of the identity of the villainess and we receive some hints for the next story to come. I laughed, I cried and I definitely swooned. I can't wait for more.
*I received a review copy for my honest opinion. Thank you!
